Mission
Haraguchi Level Field (former studio) is where Noriyuki Haraguchi (1946–2020) lived and produced art in the years from 2012 until his death, and where books and archival materials related to his works are now preserved and maintained. Our mission is to offer—in the setting in which Haraguchi explored the processes from which artworks emerge, and the artistic thinking involved—art resources that will encourage those who visit the space to ask new questions, discover new ideas, and undertake new creative activities. Haraguchi Level Field is also committed to promoting wider understanding of Haraguchi’s artistic legacy, supplying resources for research, and by the internet and other means, disseminating both this legacy, and these resources, to the rest of the world.
Research
Ephemera including Haraguchi’s notes, drawings, texts, planning documents, correspondence, photographs, film footage, and exhibition files will be digitized over time.
Events
A core function of Haraguchi Level Field will be conducting and recording interviews with various knowledgeable individuals on the activities of Noriyuki Haraguchi. An historical record of Haraguchi will be constructed by interviewing those who shared the artist’s creative vision, gathering lively anecdotes from throughout his career up to his death in 2020, plus observations on his works and artistic thinking. The aim will be to make this a living archive flowing into the future, with help and advice from artists and researchers who identify closely with Haraguchi’s creative activities. We are confident that the knowledge and testimony of these commentators will help to broaden understanding of Haraguchi’s oeuvre.
